The smoothie that ate my banana

I eat my breakfast either on my way to work or at work, and this breakfast lasts me a good 3 hours before I gobble down my lunch.  For a while, my breakfast used to be a tall glass of milk (Horlicks to be precise) along with a big bad banana.  Like many other things in my life, I hate routine in my breakfast as well and soon enough, I got tired of the lack of variety.  That is when I chanced upon this smoothie (though, I prefer to call it milk shake) and absolutely love it – well, for now, atleast.  This is a Date-nut-apple milk shake and so far, it has been bye-bye banana.

Hummer? Hormuz? Hummus!

No – it is not an off-roading gas guzzler nor is it any geographical entity, it is a mid-eastern protein packed spread that is considered one of the oldest prepared food known to mankind. The 2 main ingredients of hummus are chickpeas and sesame – both are extremely healthy and a nutritionist’s dream. In fact, the early rise and spread of the Mesopotamian civilization is attributed to the nutritional benefits of hummus. Whoa! I would have never connected or even imagined, that a success of a civilization could be due to food. There are times when I feel good about blogging, like when I meet new friends with similar interest or when I am exploring new (to me, that is) and different culture, and in turn, food. What I learnt about hummus made me realize why blogging is not just fun but also educational.

Coriander Pesto

When you buy bunches of coriander without a plan because they looked fresh and tempting, what do you do with them? You can only use so much in rasams and we are really tired of the coriander chutney 🙂 As much as I resist from buying coriander, ever so often, I give in and buy bunches of these. I am in a quandary as I don’t like wastage. This was till I had a light bulb moment, and decided to make coriander pesto. I followed the basic pesto sauce recipe – blend the greens with nuts, add olive oil, salt and pepper. This was my first attempt at making pesto and couldn’t believe how amazingly simple this was.
